My main areas of research are in the domains of video analytics, text analysis, activity recognition , ambient systems - using techniques across machine learning, deep learning, text analytics, probability based inference and evidence theory.
Domains-wise, most of my work to date has been around (1) automated analysis of social media data (text, video) and (2) activity recognition using smart home sensor data.
My PhD (2011) was entitled "Activity Recognition using Dempster-Shafer Theory", focusing on the use of evidence theory to determine user activities in the home, based on streamed sensor data.
Industry Research and projects.
I'm a principal investigator in the CeADAR research group. The main outputs of the CeADAR centre are industry prototypes and demonstrators along with state of the art reviews of data analytics technology, tools, best practice methodologies and processes. We also carry out company specific projects ( under innovation voucher and innovation partnership arrangements.
A sample of projects that I have worked on as principal investigator in CeADAR include:
DocoPool demonstrator: a web tool that allows users to explore the content of text documents for hidden knowledge discovery. It uses topic modelling based on the Latent Dirichlet Algorithm to discover common themes across body of documents.
DataGen demonstrator - this proof of concept tool enables synthetic dataset generation, allowing for feature and correlation specifications. It can also be seeded with a seeding dataset, generating similar data to the seeding set.
Site Passport innovation partnership feasibility - examined the possibility of using Blockchain technology to support online credentials checking .
Olytico - innovation voucher funded project to develop a customer dashboard.
Hyred innovation voucher - a project to developed the proof of concept for a mobile part time job recruitment start- up.
